2. How Advocating Can Help You

  • (Audio, 14 min)

Advocating is a skill that’s crucial to creating a life and job you love. I talk about my passion for and superpower of advocating for myself and others in the workplace. I share the unexpected doors that advocating can open for you. I explain the cultural and institutional significance of speaking up for yourself and others, leveraging your privilege, and uplifting your colleagues through collective advocacy.

I share successful strategies from my own experience for anyone who works full-time at a company and wants to become a bolder, more impactful advocate for themselves and others. My strategies include: leveraging your best skills, doing daily-ish stretches beyond your comfort zone, tracking your wins, leveraging your recurring meetings, show and tell, creating a culture of celebration, and finding your champions.

  • (Audio, 15 min)

Asking for what you want can be very scary. It brings up all kinds of insecurities, past traumas, and fears. I share some of the most common barriers that keep people from speaking up in the workplace and offer some ways to get braver, bolder, and less attached to the outcome.

  • (Audio, 18 min)

What could you ask for at work that would make you feel delighted, fulfilled, secure, or valued? Using examples of the audacious things I’ve asked for in my career, I help you brainstorm all the things you could ask for. Then, I show you how to check those ideas against your desires to get really clear and specific about what request would actually fulfill your needs.

  • (Audio, 22 min)

Even if you're convinced the answer will be "no," I believe you should ask for what you want. I share a wealth of reasons and stories to embolden you. Asking for what you want (whether you get it or not), will benefit you in unexpected ways. And it makes a big difference in paving the way for others and creating a workplace culture that honors humanity, values labor, and breaks the silence of inequity.

3. Preparing to Advocate or Negotiate

  • (Audio, 26 min)

You know what you want to ask for. What’s the best way to ask? Your instincts and body know best. But in case it sparks some ideas, I share my experience and advice on determining how to ask, who to ask, and when to ask, including pro tips on tapping into your network and how budget cycles and staffing decisions are made in non-profits.

  • (Audio, 21 min)

Once you know what you want, this is the first step to making it happen. I share how to shift into a receptive state to receive what you want NOW, which will bring ease and results to your process. I share practices to help you legitimize, own, and embody your desires and signal to others that you’re ready to receive and enjoy them.

  • (Audio, 33 min)

Let’s talk about all the doubts and feelings coming up before you make an ask. I share context for why you’re feeling the way you do and strategies for how to address feelings and thoughts, validate them, reframe them, and move through them so they can be used as fuel for an impactful ask. These exercises and perspectives will help you make your request from a calibrated, grounded, clear place.

A guided visualization to help you legitimize, embody, and receive what you want.

  • (Audio, 42 min)

If you only listen to one audio lesson about advocating at work, this is the one. What should you say to make an influential request? I share five guiding questions you can use to prepare, along with copious examples for making a balanced, direct, powerful request backed by evidence and influence. An ask that invites the other person to be your ally and gives them everything they need to take your request over the finish line.

I share two personal negotiation stories--one that worked and one that didn't. They illustrate that being crystal clear about what you want AND directly articulating it (without mixed messages) can be the difference between a "yes" and a "no." Also, I reassure you that sometimes you'll nail an ask and sometimes you'll bomb it. It doesn't have to mean that you totally blew it or you suck at this and should never try again. It just means you're human and you're a BADASS for trying.

6. Protecting Your Energy

  • (Audio, 28 min)

As you get clear about what drains you and what lights you up, you'll want to say "no" a lot more often. This is an enthusiastic pep talk about the vast benefits of saying "no" when something isn't aligned with your joy or violates your limits. But even when you want to say "no," actually doing it can be SO HARD. I share specific strategies for how to say "no," how to take care of yourself through the crazy discomfort, and how to find empowering freedom through the process.

7. Work, Life, & Identity

  • (Audio, 38 min)

How do you meet your material needs and your soulful needs in the realm of work? Where is the sweet spot between practical realities and creative fulfillment? I talk about two options: having creatively and financially fulfilling work OR having a good-enough job that pays the bills and getting your other needs met outside work. In answering this question, I untangle the difference between a hobby, a job, a career, and a vocation. I talk about how our relationship to work is a constant negotiation as our needs change during different seasons of life. Then I share my thoughts on how to find success using either of these options, as well as how to avoid the traps of each one. We also talk about calibrating your energy output to avoid burnout, making enough money, and where “purpose” comes into play.
